(SALEM, Ind. - September 5, 2012) - Salem Speedway officials have announced that Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer has been named Grand Marshal of the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA Fall Classic presented by Federated Car Care, scheduled for Saturday, September 15.
Meyer, a United States Marine Corps veteran, was awarded the highest military decoration for his actions during the Battle of Ganjgal on September 8, 2009, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
He is just the third living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, and the first living United States Marine in 38 years to be so honored.
"We are extremely pleased to have Dakota involved with the ARCA Fall Classic," said track general manager Richard Deaton. "He is truly an American hero and credit to the brave fighting men and women of the United States military."
According to the Medal of Honor citation, Corporal Meyer displayed conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Marine Embedded Training Team 2-8, Regional Corps Advisory Command 3-7, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
Meyer, who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in the East Room of the White House (right), is credited with saving 36 lives during the six-hour firefight.
If all goes as planned, the 24-year-old native of Greensburg, Ky. will not only serve as Grand Marshal of the ARCA Fall Classic on September 15 but make his racing debut as well, exactly one year to the day of receiving the Medal of Honor.
Meyer, who has friends and relatives involved in racing, recently purchased a car that competes in the Lucas Oil Great American Stock division at Salem Speedway. He hopes to land a starting spot in the Federated Car Care 50, a race that serves as a prelude to the ARCA 200.
Meyer completed a successful test session at Salem Speedway on Tuesday afternoon.
Spectator gates open at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 15th, with practice beginning at 11:30 a.m. Qualifications for the Lucas Oil Great American Stocks are set for 3 p.m. with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell for the ARCA Racing Series starting at 4 p.m. The Federated Car Care 50 for the Lucas Oil Great American Stocks will roll off at 5:30 p.m., with the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers Fall Classic 200 scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. (EDT) start time.
