(ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin – June 21, 2013) – The last time the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards ran on a road course, Andrew Ranger passed Chase Elliott on the last lap for the victory.
During Friday's practice session at Road America in advance of Saturday's SCOTT 160, Elliott and Ranger were the two fastest cars and will be among the favorites when Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell takes place at 9:05 a.m. Saturday.
Elliott turned just two laps in his Aaron's-Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet but one of those was the fastest lap of the day at 109.056 mph. Ranger, in the No. 53 WM Bagster Dodge, was second with Austin Dillon, Ryan Blaney and SCOTT Rookie Challenge leader Mason Mingus rounding out the top five. Series point leader Frank Kimmel was sixth fastest with defending ARCA Racing Series champion Chris Buescher seventh, Will Kimmel was eighth and Venturini Motorsports teammates A.J. Henriksen and Justin Boston rounding out the top 10, respectively.
However, many of the top teams are staying late to work on their cars, including Kimmel's ThorSport team and Mingus's Win-Tron team, both of which are changing engines. The Venturini Motorsports 25 team is changing transmissions, as is the Hendrick Motorsports 9 team of Elliott. The No. 42 Crosley Radio team is also working on the front end of their car after Bo LeMastus slid off the course.
Ranger has won each of the last two road course races at New Jersey Motorsports Park in 2011 and 2012.
Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell is scheduled for 9:05 a.m. Saturday. While qualifying is typically done with one car on the track at a time, qualifying on a road course is different. Cars will be split into groups based on practice speeds, then will go out onto the track in those groups for 10 minute sessions. Qualifying will then be based on fastest lap times during those 10 minute sessions.
The SCOTT 160 is scheduled to start around 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Central Time.
