TOLEDO OH (1-7-10) - It'll be business as usual for Joey Coulter headed into the 2010 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards season ...... sort of.
In fact, the entire crew, headed up by NASCAR veteran crew chief Harold Holly, is returning to run the full tour.
The only change is the driver who occupies the seat of the no. 16 Tempest Cycles-Darrell Gwynn Foundation Chevrolet. The team won't be changing drivers; rather, it's the driver who's changed. Coulter is no longer a rookie. What was all foreign territory to the Miami Springs, Florida driver will feel more like home in 2010.
"Last year was a big learning year for me as a driver and for my dad as a team owner," said Coulter. "I'm still learning all the time, but I'll have a new level of comfort heading into the season.
"We had to build our entire team from the ground up last year. We were still building it in July all the while we were trying to build our next car. Then, if we wrecked, on top of building a program, you had to stop and fix a good car. We were always chasing it.
"Right now, we have 12 cars to work with, and there's only one car that's not ready. So we'll have a much better start this year than we did last year; at least that's the plan.
"Harold's back, the whole crew. Nobody's changed; everyone's back."
Despite not being completely ready for the world's most versatile stock car tour in 2009, Coulter, who finished fourth overall in points, performed with admirable skill on tracks, most of which he had never seen before. With a full year under his belt and a race-ready team, a championship is certainly not out of the question.
"We're definitely running the full year; we definitely have a good shot (at the championship). I've got a lot more confidence in myself. The guys in the shop are way more relaxed; everyone's more confident. The cars are built. This year should be a lot different than last."
Coulter and crew chief Holly tested very well in the recent open test at Daytona.
"Harold (Holly) and I were really pleased with our primary car. Our back-up was a little less consistent but still very good. The primary car was great by itself and really good pulling the line. It seemed like I could pull better than most, so we know the front of the car is getting through the air really good."
In addition to all his crew coming back for 2010, Coulter's sponsors are also again on board.
"Tempest Cycles is coming back for the full year. We'll also be supporting the Darrell Gwynn Foundation like we always do. We're all really looking forward to 2010.
"The first two races of the year are in my home state. Palm Beach is really close to home, so I'll have a bunch of high school friends out for that one, so that should be a really cool race.
It's only my second road course race, so that'll definitely be different.
"Really looking forward to going back to Salem and Iowa. Salem's just so much fun; there's no other track where you're so out-of-control on. And Iowa really fits my driving style, Not sure why. Maybe because it feels like a combination between a short track and an intermediate track - sort of short track with a big track feel."
Coulter earned the pole at Iowa last year and finished third in the race. Coulter also came close to winning at Salem in the fall before a late-race wall banger ended his run.
Coulter, in addition to preparing for the 2010 race season, is a fulltime student at UNC Charlotte studying Mechanical Engineering.
