In the mid to late 1980s, there was one driver everyone feared when the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards took to the highbanks at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.
Chattanooga, Tennessee’s Grant Adcox ran sporadically in the NASCAR Cup Series through the mid 1970s into the 1980s, earning a best result of fifth in the 1978 Winston 500 at Talladega.
Adcox and his father, car dealer Herb Adcox, struggled to find the funding to race on the Cup circuit competitively. They finally made the move to the ARCA Racing Series in the 1980s and Grant found his stride.
He routinely flexed his muscles on the speedways, winning four times on the big tracks in 1986, including the season opener at Daytona, both Talladega races and the season finale at Atlanta. In 1987, he again swept Talladega, and in 1988, earned a pair of wins, one each at Talladega and Atlanta. In 1989 he earned his final win – his first and only on a short track – at Flat Rock.
Adcox perished in a single-car crash in the Cup Series finale in 1989 at Atlanta. He was just 39 years old.
