Former ARCA Menards Series winner Michael Annett scored his first career NASCAR XFINITY Series win in Saturday’s NASCAR Driving Experience 300 at Daytona International Speedway.
Annett made ten ARCA Menards Series starts from 2007 through 2009 for team owners Kevin Cywinski, Bill Davis, and Shigeaki Hattori. Annett’s two wins, at Talladega in 2007 and Daytona in 2008, came while driving for Davis.
Annett’s first NXS win came by just over a tenth of a second as he flashed under the checkered flag in front of his JR Motorsports teammate, 2008 ARCA Menards Series champion Justin Allgaier. When Annett won at Daytona in 2008, the driver he finished ahead of? Allgaier.
They led a top-three sweep of former ARCA winners as Brandon Jones, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, finished third. Jones, a five-time ARCA winner, last went to victory lane in the ARCA Menards Series last year at Charlotte.
Austin Cindric, an ARCA winner at Kentucky in 2016, rounded out the top five driving for Team Penske.
Three-time ARCA winner Christopher Bell finished sixth and Chase Elliott, who won at Pocono in 2013 to become the series’ youngest-ever superspeedway winner, finished tenth.
Chase Briscoe, the 2016 ARCA Menards Series champion, finished 12th. Another Pocono ARCA winner, Cole Custer, finished 13th and three-time ARCA winner Justin Haley was the final previous ARCA winner in the top twenty with a 17th-place finish.
Other ARCA winners in the field included two-time winner Scott Lagasse, Jr., in 21st, Josh Williams, who won at Nashville and Madison in 2016, who finished 22nd, and Jeremy Clements, who finished 36th after engine problems sidelined him after 90 laps.
Twenty-four of the 38 drivers that started the NXS season opener had at least one ARCA start.
