TUCSON, Ariz. — Records are meant to be broken.
That’s what Tanner Gray did in qualifying for the Port of Tucson Twin 100s at Tucson Speedway on Saturday, flying around the 0.375-mile oval in 15.046 seconds (89.725 mph), breaking Butch Gilliland’s track record (88.328 mph) set in 23 years ago in 1996.
“It was pretty good for us,” the Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender and K&N Pro Series East regular said of his lap. “We made a lot of changes throughout practice just going back and forth on things we just weren’t sure about. But all the guys from DGR-Crosley definitely made the right move there. I felt like it was a little free in, so I feel like there was definitely more on the table. All in all, it was a really good lap for us. Looking forward to the race.”

Gray won the first twin 100 at South Boston Speedway last weekend for his first career victory. Derek Kraus won the second, and will roll off second (15.087) alongside Gray. After being quickest in practice, Brittney Zamora (15.090) qualified third, with Jagger Jones (15.138) and Hailie Deegan (15.217) rounding out the top five speeds.
Irwindale winner Trevor Huddleston, Dustin Ash, Travis Milburn, Kody Vanderwal (last year’s winner of both races) and Todd Souza completed the top 10 qualifiers.
The top six cars broke Gilliland’s previous track record.
Port Of Tucson Twin 100 race No. 1 is scheduled to begin at approximately 7 p.m. with race No. 2 following shortly thereafter. Both races will be streamed live on FansChoice.TV.
