PRACTICE: Sam Mayer Quickest In First Trip to Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. — Although it’s his first trip to Memphis International Raceway, Sam Mayer already looks like he’s a track veteran.

The 15-year-old GMS Racing driver was quickest in the first and only practice session on Saturday afternoon at MIR, turning a lap of 26.620 seconds around the 0.75-mile short track.

Mayer’s quick lap (114.310 mph) came on his 20th of 22 laps in the 90-minute session. He also turned the second-least amount of laps (Colin Garrett’s 16).

“We had a really good car in practice, and I feel like we’re good race run and qualifying run,” he said. “I think we’re going to have a really good starting spot for the race, have a really good car for the race and hopefully be there at the end.”

Derek Kraus (23.648), Chase Cabre (23.674), Drew Dollar (23.707) and Garrett (23.731) completed the top five quickest drivers with Tanner Gray, Ty Gibbs, Max McLaughlin, Spencer Davis and Todd Gilliland rounding out the top 10 speeds.

PRACTICE RESULTS

Defending Memphis winner Ruben Garcia Jr. was 11th on the speed charts. Parker Retzlaff, making his series debut, was 14th. There were no incidents in the session and all 14 cars took time.

Group qualifying will take place at 4:15 p.m. The green flag for The Memphis 150 presented by AutoZone is scheduled to go green at approximately 6 p.m. CDT. FansChoice.TV will have live coverage of the event.
