PIT BOX: K&N East Season Twists and Turns Into Watkins Glen

The K&N Pro Series East season is flying by.

Watkins Glen International will play host to the eighth race of the 2019 season. Following the conclusion of the first and only road course race on the schedule, the season will be two-thirds over. Before we get ahead of ourselves, there are still plenty of storylines to play out.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

Coming off his second career victory, Sam Mayer now has the points lead and may not relinquish it for the remainder of the season. After all, his No. 21 Chevy Accessories Chevrolet has been top in class since unloading in New Smyrna. If it weren’t for some last-lap misfortune in South Boston, the 16-year-old could be looking at a worst finish of fourth in 2019.

Great Outdoors Rv 100 C PrimaryMayer may have plans to win the next four races, but not if Derek Kraus has anything to say about it. After an eventful evening in Iowa, Kraus’ fourth-place finish dropped him six points behind Mayer in the standings heading to Watkins Glen, a track the five-time K&N Pro Series winner this season has never visited in his career.

Not too far behind the two teenagers is Chase Cabre, winner of two races this season. A fifth-place finish lost him ground at Iowa as the aforementioned Mayer and Kraus finished ahead of the No. 4 Max Siegel Inc./Eibach Toyota for Rev Racing. Cabre has one top 10 in two prior WGI starts.

His teammate Ruben Garcia Jr. is coming off a season-best result of third at Iowa and heading to Watkins Glen, one of his favorite and best tracks, with momentum. In three trips to the upstate New York road course, Garcia has two top 10s and one top five.

Following a rough couple weeks, DGR Crosley is looking to get back on track with all three cars. Drew Dollar rebounded in a back-up car at New Hampshire for a top 10 and Tanner Gray did the same this past weekend in Iowa for a sixth-place result.

Ty Gibbs, however, is Mr. Second Place. In his three K&N Pro Series East starts this season, he’s finished second in all of them (New Smyrna, Memphis and Iowa). He’s looking to do one better in his first trip to The Glen for DGR.

Max McLaughlin is still looking for his first victory in the K&N Pro Series. Although road course racing may not be what Mad Max is known for, Hattori Racing Enterprises won this event last season with Brett Moffitt. It’s safe to say the No. 1 will have speed once again this weekend.

Driving for Bill McAnally Racing, NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Brandon Jones will be making his first K&N East start since 2017 and third at WGI. In two prior starts, he’s finished sixth and 11th.

Dylan Murry will make his third K&N start and second at WGI. He’ll be piloting the famed No. 7 for Jefferson Pitts Racing. The organization has won 10 of the last 11 road course races in K&N Pro Series competition, most recently at Sonoma Raceway with Noah Gragson.
