WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Max McLaughlin had never competed on a road course before this weekend. But after laying down the quickest in practice for the Great Outdoors RV Superstore 100 at Watkins Glen International, he earned his second pole of his K&N Pro Series East career.
Not bad for a rookie turning left and right.

“I wanted to get in the 15-second bracket, but I guess it’s alright,” he joked. “Got a really good car today. I made a mistake in qualifying, it hurt us that second lap there, which probably would’ve been a little faster. But it is what it is, got a great starting position and hopefully we can go for a win for these guys.”
His lap of 1:16.180 came in the final group of qualifying on Friday afternoon, besting DGR-Crosley teammates Tanner Gray (1:16.761) and Ty Gibbs (1:16.907) as well as Rev Racing teammates Chase Cabre (1:16.955) and Ruben Garcia Jr. (1:17.089) rounding out the top five.
Derek Kraus, Dylan Murry, Spencer Davis, championship points leader Sam Mayer and Riley Herbst completed the top 10.
Brandon Jones failed to make a lap in the session, as his car began smoking during his qualifying run.
