Jagger Jones Earns 2019 Sunoco Rookie of the Year Honors

Third-generation driver Jagger Jones ended his 2019 accomplishing both of his main goals: win a race and earn Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors.

Once the checkered flag flew on the season finale at ISM Raceway in the Arizona Lottery 100, Jones’ home track, a short drive from his hometown of Scottsdale, he officially clinched the Rookie of the Year title for Sunrise Ford.

“It was definitely one of our goals,” Jones said. “That and to win races, those were our two main goals. I think the whole season we’ve led the Rookie of the Year standings which is pretty cool, and separated ourselves from the other rookies and got it done.”

Jones earned 11 top 10s and eight top fives in the 14-race season, including 248 laps led, one win, one pole and an average finish of 5.4.

He beat out Bill McAnally Racing’s Brittney Zamora in the rookie race, which gave Jones an extra added satisfaction to give Bob Bruncati the edge over McAnally in this race.

“McAnally versus Sunrise was definitely the race in the West competition wise,” he said. “To get that and finish second in the points in my rookie season, I was pretty pleased with that.”

Jones became the sixth driver in the last 13 years for Sunrise Ford Racing to win the top rookie honors, joining Jason Bowles (2007), Luis Martinez Jr. (2010), Austin Dyne (2012), Dylan Lupton (2013) and James Bickford (2014). He broke a three-year streak of rookie of the year awards won by BMR.
