QUALIFYING: Derek Griffith Scores First Career Pole

NEW SMYRNA, Fla. — Not too bad for his first day driving a stock car.

Super late model ace Derek Griffith put his No. 2 Chad Bryant Racing Ford on the pole for the Skip’s Western Outfitters 175 at New Smyrna Speedway with an 18.673-second circuit.

Griffith said he first laid eyes on the car yesterday and it drives drastically different than what he’s used to. But after being second-quickest in practice and earning the General Tire pole, he seems to be adjusting well.

Max McLaughlin (18.736), Nick Sanchez (18.752), Ty Gibbs (18.766) and Corey Heim (18.802) rounded out the top five quickest speeds.

Sam Mayer, Daniel Dye, Stephen Nasse, Giovani Bromante and Mason Diaz completed the top 10.
