Defending East champion Sam Mayer will make the trek out West Thursday, and he’ll celebrate the occasion with a tribute to a former rising star.
Mayer will run the ARCA Menards Series West opener at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a paint scheme tribute to the late Spencer Clark. Mayer and GMS will also run the tribute car in the inaugural Sioux Chief Showdown race for the ARCA Menards Series at Phoenix Raceway on Friday, March 6.
Clark got his start racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, earning rookie of the year honors in the Late Models in 2003 He made his West debut two years later, and his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in 2006. He was killed in an automobile accident near Albuqurque, New Mexico, in 2006 at the age of 19.

Maury Gallagher and Spencer Gallagher, owners of GMS Racing, are from Las Vegas. Their No. 23 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series carry the number in honor of Clark.

The 16-year-old Mayer finished second in the West finale at Phoenix last season. He won the 2019 East championship and opened defense of his 2020 title with a win at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway.
