PIT BOX: Toledo Speedway Set For Doubleheader Weekend

Double the risk.

Double the reward.

Four hundred laps between Friday evening and Saturday night could very well turn the fortunes of ARCA Menards Series championship contenders, either good or bad. Good finishes will be at a premium at Toledo Speedway, starting first with the Menards.com 200 presented by SPxE on Friday (8 p.m. ET). Less than 24 hours later, they’ll be back at it with the Menards 200 presented by Crosley Brands on Saturday (6 p.m.).

Both races will air live on MAVTV, and will be streamed live on TrackPass on NBC Gold.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

Bret Holmes couldn’t ask for a better scenario.

The 23-year-old from Munford, Alabama, culminated a strong run since the return to racing with his first career win at Kansas Speedway. Now he returns to the track where the positive momentum began, having whittled Michael Self’s championship lead down to nine points.

Holmes record a strong third-place run after starting seventh in the ARCA Menards Series East race at Toledo back in June. It kicked off a seven-race span in which he finished outside the top four just once. Prior to that, he had just one top five in three starts at the Ohio half-mile.

On the other side of the coin, Self will look to extend his streak of eight straight top 10s to start the season. But he will also look to improve upon a recent stretch in which he has finished outside the top five in three of his last four starts.

The doubleheader is also part of the Sioux Chief Showdown, where Chandler Smith holds a 10-point lead over Smith and 13 over Ty Gibbs after three events. Gibbs won the East race at Toledo earlier this year and is coming off a win his last time out at Iowa Speedway. Meanwhile, Smith edged Gibbs for the win in a rain-shortened ARCA Menards Series event at Toledo last year.

Toledo was originally only on the ARCA Menards Series East schedule. But with the multiple postponements due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the home track for the ARCA Series returned to the schedule for the ARCA Menards Series. The venue has hosted 77 previous races dating back to 1963, and played a key role in a number of previous championship campaigns.

That tradition is set to continue this weekend.
