PRACTICE: Sammy Smith Paces Field At New Smyrna

Few are enjoying the 2021 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway like Sammy Smith.

The day after the 16-year-old earned a Super Late Model victory, he logged the best lap time in Monday’s practice session for the Jeep Beach 175, the ARCA Menards Series East season-opener scheduled to start Monday night at 7:40 p.m. ET and broadcast live on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold.

Driving the No. 18 Engine Ice Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, the car Ty Gibbs will run in the ARCA Menards Series in 2021 while Smith runs in the East Series, the rookie ran a best lap of 18.715 seconds / 92.332 mph.

Parker Retzlaff was second quickest with a time of 18.793 seconds / 91.949 mph. Taylor Gray was third at 18.825 seconds / 91.793 mph followed by Joey Iest at 18.851 seconds / 91.666 mph and Carson Kvapil at 18.931 seconds / 91.279 mph.

Max Gutierrez, Mason Diaz, Jack Wood, Rajah Caruth and Colt Hensley rounded out the top 10 in practice.

Daniel Dye experienced engine trouble after four laps of practice. His team was working to replace the engine before Monday night’s race.

The Jeep Beach 175 falls on night four of New Smyrna’s nine-night World Series of Asphalt. Qualifying for the race is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET ahead of the race at 7:40 p.m. ET.
