Ed Pompa to continue ‘virtual camper appreciation tour’ with Double H Ranch on car at Pocono

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. — ARCA Menards Series driver Ed Pompa has carried the logo of the Double H Ranch on his car since he started racing in 2006.

Now with names of “virtual campers” featured on the logo, he will do so again when he competes at Pocono Raceway on Friday, June 25, in the General Tire #AnywhereIsPossible 200. The race will mark the Ballston Spa, New York, native’s 24th ARCA Menards Series start at the Tricky Triangle.

Located in Luzerne, New York, Double H Rance is a “serious fun camp” member. Its mission is to provide specialized programs and year-round support for children and their families dealing with life-threatening illness. Its purpose is to enrich their lives and provide camp experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound.

All Double H Ranch programs are free of charge and capture the magic of the local Adirondack Mountains. The Double H Ranch, co-founded by Charles R. Wood and Paul Newman, is a 501 (c) (3) organization; all contributions are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

“2020 was a tough year for everyone,” said Pompa. “Double H Ranch, for the first time since they opened in 1993, couldn’t have any children attend camp due to the restrictions. All the children who were scheduled to attend had to resort to a ‘virtual camp,’ instead. This was extremely tough on not only the kids, but on the staff at Double H Ranch, as well. This amazing group of staff and volunteers give their time and energy to help the campers have the greatest camp experience. They can forget about being a ‘sick kid’ and just be a ‘kid’ for a week.

“When the 2021 race season rolled around, I decided to do a little something for the campers who didn’t get to experience Double H in 2020. Trimaxx Graphics designed an awesome wrap for Talladega, and we added all 476 names of these ‘virtual campers’ from 2020 to the Double H Ranch logo on the hood of the car.

“They rode with me at Talladega Superspeedway and Dover International Speedway. They will also be with me at Pocono.”

A total of 23 of Pompa’s 69 ARCA Menards Series starts have come at Pocono, with the last 18 starts at the 2.5-mile triangle track coming in consecutive years. He is still searching for his first top-10 Pocono finish.

Beyond the Pocono race, Pompa plans to feature the names of the “virtual campers” on his car when he competes this season at Watkins Glen International in August and at Indiana’s Salem Speedway in October. He is calling this season the “virtual camper appreciation tour.”

“All of the company names on the ARCA car are supporting the Double H Ranch,” Pompa added. “I started this sponsorship program in 2009. When a company I contacted would donate to Double H, I would put their logo on the car for free. Double H gets all of their sponsorship money.

“(Fast Track Racing team owner) Andy Hillenburg has helped out by putting the Double H Ranch logo on the hauler, as well as leaving the Double H Ranch logo on some of the ARCA cars for other races to garner some more publicity — like Dick Doheny’s No. 10 at Toledo Speedway, for example.

“I have to thank all those supporting the Double H Ranch this year: Burt Crane & Rigging, Turn One Condos, Pompa Bros Inc., T-Shirt Graphics, Cen-Pe-Co Lubricants, Fast Track Racing, Barb & Jay Biondi, Hytorc of NY, mom, and of course my wife, Nancy. If she didn’t let me go out and race, none of this would happen.
