Because of age restrictions at bigger tracks, some drivers who compete on the ARCA Menards platform are not eligible to run the complete, 20-race ARCA Menards Series schedule. So how can those drivers compete for a title against the drivers who are eligible to race at all venues?
Enter the Sioux Chief Showdown.
Established in 2015 as a short track challenge and having since evolved to include road-course events, the Sioux Chief Showdown is ARCA’s series within the series that brings together the best of the ARCA Menards Series, the ARCA Menards Series East and the ARCA Menards Series West.
Each year, the 10-race Sioux Chief Showdown, held at various short tracks and road courses, offers drivers who might not be old enough to race at bigger ovals a chance to compete for a championship against drivers who are. True to its purpose, the inaugural 2015 title was won by Kyle Weatherman, who was only eligible to compete in 15 of the 20 ARCA Menards Series races that year due to age restrictions.
Formerly known as the Sioux Chief Short Track Challenge, an expanded partnership with Sioux Chief beginning in 2020 increased the event purse and point fund significantly. It also added prestige and a variety of venues to the in-season championship. New guidelines and common rule packages were implemented, aiming to draw in teams that otherwise primarily compete in East or West Series races.
Ty Gibbs, 2021 ARCA Menards Series champion, also won the Sioux Chief Showdown.
In 2022, the Sioux Chief Showdown begins March 11 with an ARCA Menards Series/ARCA Menards Series West combination event at Phoenix Raceway. After a break in the schedule, it resumes June 11 with the ARCA Menards Seres/East Series combo event at Iowa Speedway, followed by the June 18 ARCA Menards Series race at Berlin Raceway and the June 25 ARCA Menards Series race at Elko Speedway.
Two Sioux Chief Showdown events are scheduled for July, with ARCA Menards Series races on the eighth at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and on the 29th at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway park.
Likewise, two Showdown events are scheduled for August, with an ARCA Menards Series race at Watkins Glen International on Aug. 19 and an ARCA Menards Series/East Series combo event at the Milwaukee Mile on the 28th.
The Showdown will then head to the dirt mile on the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds for its penultimate event on Sept. 4. The schedule will close at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sept. 15 in a combination event with the ARCA Menards Series and East Series.
