Racing Perspectives; Post Berlin....By Chris Knight

For those of you that have been following my blogs since I was writing under The Fifth Turn will remember ARCA driver Ricky Byers. I first interviewed Ricky back in December 2009 when he was looking for a sponsor for his “Racing for a Cure.” To date, Byers still continues his vision of locking in a sponsor(s) for the upcoming 2011 ARCA racing season to help him with the funding for finding the cure for Cancer.

I recently received a text message from Ricky with good news. Byers will soon have a chance to put his “Racing for a Cure” Chevy back on the track. Thanks in part to some sponsorship opportunities, Byers will be racing in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Febuary 12, 2011. Byers will have the opportunity to hopefully get air time for his “Racing for a Cure” Chevy and pick up a sponsor or sponsors in the near future.

Byers, as some of you may already know, has previously triumphed two bouts with squamous cell carcinoma (the same cancer that claimed Bobby Hamilton’s life back in January 2007) and as a result, lost a vocal cord. Byers wants to “Race for a Cure” and will donate all his winnings, merchandise and promotional earnings from racing to cancer research.

Byers was previously at Daytona International Speedway for an ARCA test session in January. I asked him what he thought about the new racing surface – “Loved the new surface. It is going to make for some exciting and competitive racing,” Byers said.

Ricky will be with the rest of the ARCA drivers for an open garage/autograph session on February 12th at 12:30pm – 2:00pm.
