Hessert Returns to Cunningham Motorsports for 2013

(MOORESVILLE, N.C. - January 7, 2013) - Having tested in a Cunningham Motorsports Dodge at Daytona Int'l Speedway in mid-December, it was widely speculated that Tom Hessert would be driving for Cunningham in 2013.

It's now official as Cunningham and Hessert recently made the announcement that Hessert would be running for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards championship.

"We are thrilled to have Tom return to our organization," said Cunningham Motorsports co-owner Kerry Scherer. "With Tom already familiar with our organization, we should have a smooth transition at Daytona in February, with very little adjustment period. We are looking forward to a great 2013 season."

Hessert ran fulltime for Cunningham in 2010, finishing third in championship point standings, a career-best for the Cherry Hill, New Jersey veteran. The team also earned one victory at Iowa Speedway that same season.

Right from the drop of the green flag at Daytona in February, Hessert and his team plan to turn heads, and resolve to return to Victory Lane with more regularity in 2013, and make a serious run at the series title. hessertiowacarshot400pix.jpgAfter testing at Daytona, NASCAR championship crew chief Paul Andrews returned to the team's Mooresville, North Carolina shop with great information to make Hessert's No. 77 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge race-ready for the season opener. As a development team for Penske Racing, the team will be utilizing Penske Racing engines in 2013, resulting in high expectations for all.

Hessert's most recent ARCA win came at Salem Speedway in September of 2012, driving for Ken Schrader Racing. The 2013 season will mark Hessert's sixth consecutive season in the ARCA Racing Series where he has earned two wins overall among 25 top-five finishes and 49 top-10s in 98 career starts.

Hessert is a second generation racer, following in his father's (Tom Hessert II) tracks. One of the highlights of Hessert's racing career has been competing twice in the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona with his father, who is a three-time winner of the Rolex 24 Hour race event. In 2003, Hessert was the first 16-year-old to compete in that race. Hessert began his racing career at the age of six and graduated from quarter midgets into go-karts and Micro Sprints, winning numerous races and divisional championships at each level. The veteran of the USAR Pro Cup Series, USAC Sprint Car Series, and USAC Midget Series enjoys working out, golf, and movies.

He was also recently married in November of 2012.
