ARCA teams prepare for soaring temps

With temperatures expected to be in the 90s for Sunday's Herr's Live Life With Flavor 200 at Madison International Speedway, race teams are already preparing themselves for the heat battle.

"We talk about it and we tell our teams to start preparing during the week," said Kevin Reed, crew chief for the No. 15 Venturini Motorsports car. "It's always a concern. This year, fortunately, the heat hasn't been an issue, it's mainly been the rain.

"But, we tell our team to drink lots of water and Gatorade, a mixture of them."

Josh Williams, driver of the 02 Allegiant Travel Ford, said he drinks plenty of fluids - starting today.

"I try to drink water and pedialyte," Williams said. "It keeps my electrolytes up."

For practice and qualifying scheduled for today, temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s. For race day, Sunday, the forecast is calling for a high of 92 with a slight wind.

Williams said the race helmet he will be wearing has a built-in cooling system.

"Every little bit helps to make things a little more comfortable," he said.

Nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel said food choices make a difference, too.

"I try and stay hydrated for a couple of days out because you know you are going to sweat a lot," he said. "Drink lots of water and eat a banana instead of a candy bar."

The helmets that drivers wear, he said, make a big difference.

"There is an air conditioning system in there," he said. "If you ever get to the point where you don't think it's working, all you have to do is lift your visor and you can tell it's working."

Sunday's Herr's Live Life With Flavor 200 is the sixth appearance at Madison International Speedway for the ARCA Racing Series.
