Jersey Girl Bonanno Returns Home for ARCA Debut

(MILLVILLE, N.J. - May 17, 2011) - Five-time Florida Region SCCA road course champion Robin Bonanno will launch into the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards at New Jersey Motorsports Park's Thunderbolt Raceway on Sunday, May 22. Bonanno was born and raised in Nutley, N.J., near New York City and about 125 miles from Thunderbolt Raceway.

Bonanno has competed in 83 SCCA sanctioned races in her 11 year racing career. She has accumulated 47 podium finishes, including 31 first place finishes, at race tracks including Sebring International, Daytona International Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, and Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

Bonanno is thrilled to be able to kick off her ARCA Racing Series career in her home state. In 1998, she moved to Florida and as fate would have it, her next door neighbor turned out to be none other than Amos Johnson, the Mazda factory driver who was a five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, a two-time winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring, and a veteran of over 400 professional road course races. Johnson was able to guide and tutor Robin through her start-up years.

Most recently, Bonanno has worked tirelessly and tested with 1995 ARCA Racing Series champion and Rockingham Speedway owner Andy Hillenburg.  Bonanno had become accustomed to driving a British race car called a Radical, which is much lighter, more agile, and features less horsepower than the typical ARCA Racing Series car.hillenburg10car2011.jpg

Hillenburg, also the owner of the Fast Track Racing School, said, "Robin has made the difficult adjustment to the heavier racecar and is sure ready for the upcoming New Jersey race."

In Newark, N.J., Bonanno owned and managed her own business that manufactured custom aluminum fly rod cases, learned to fly, and received her pilot's license at the Lincoln Park, N.J. airport. She spent her summers at Monmouth College, doing summer stock theater.

This weekend, she will drive the No. 10 Ford for Hillenburg, pictured at right.
