Self leads SCOTT Rookie Challenge at midway point of season

(TOLEDO, Ohio – July 16, 2014) – Austin Wayne Self is in the drivers’ seat to become the fourth driver from the Cunningham Motorsports stable to win the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards SCOTT Rookie Challenge since 2009.

Through 10 races, Self has opened up a wide lead over runner-up Karl Weber, the Hixson Motorsports driver.

“I'm really happy we have been able to hold the rookie lead,” Self said.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season heads to Chicagoland Speedway this week for the Ansell ActivArmr 150. It’s the 11th race of the 2014 season.

First-year ARCA competitors compete for per-race cash bonus awards and the year-end Scott Rookie Challenge bonus of $10,000.

Last year, Justin Boston, from Venturini Motorsports, used a late-season rush to surpass Mason Mingus to win the honor and post-season cash bonus.

Drivers like Benny Parsons, the late Davey Allison, Frank Kimmel and Bobby Gerhart are past ARCA rookies of the year who went on to successful stock car careers. Cunningham drivers Alex Bowman (2012), Dakoda Armstrong (2010) and Parker Kligerman (2009) are some of the recent winners of the rookie of the year honor.

“Many ARCA Racing Series rookies have turned success in the ARCA series into success into other racing series,” said Mark Gundrum, vice-president of business development and corporate partnerships for ARCA. “We are proud to have the Scott Brand aligned with those drivers and the next group of young stars as they rise in their careers.”

Self has made nine starts in his No. 22 AM Technical Solutions Dodge, scoring two top five’s and five top 10’s. His season-best is a third at Talladega Superspeedway which was his superspeedway debut.

Michael Lira and Cody Coughlin are tied for third place in the rookie standings and Kyle Benjamin is in fifth-place. Benjamin began the year in a Roulo Brothers Racing Ford, but is no longer with that team and is unsure about more ARCA races this season.

The SCOTT Rookie Challenge will count each competitor’s top 15 races of the 20-race season.

In addition to the Scott Rookie Challenge, Scott is an official company sponsor of the ARCA Racing Series and will sponsor the July 25 Get Geared Up 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Clermont, Ind.

Here are the current SCOTT Rookie Challenge point standings:
