DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 13, 2018) -- Dave Mader III, who won at Michigan Int’l Speedway and scored runner-up finishes at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway in the 1990s, turned in the fastest lap in ARCA Racing Series testing Saturday morning at Daytona Int'l Speedway.

In a No. 63 Chevrolet fielded by Jeff Spraker Racing, Mader put up the fastest lap of the two-day test so far at 183.352 mph.

“The last time I was here was in 1991 racing in the Twin 125s trying to qualify for the Daytona 500, we ended up wrecking," said Mader. “Jeff Spraker and I started putting this deal together a couple of months ago.

"I was at the back of the pack and we sucked up really well to put that lap up on the board. I was far enough back…I thought I had lost the draft, but the car came back to the pack."

The No. 63 reached back through Spraker's roots.

“This the first time I’ve brought a car to Daytona with the number 63," said Spraker. "This was my dad’s number when he raced, and my number when I drove. With the three of us working on the car, we have over 140 years of racing experience. And that’s not counting the driver. We used to own this car a few years back. We sold it a few years ago, then bought it back in December and put a new composite body on it. It was fast then, and it's fast now.”

Willie Mullins, in his own No. 3 Mullins Racing Ford, was second fastest.

"We gathered a lot of data yesterday, then worked last night at the hotel on a plan for today," said Mullins. "The changes we made were minute, but made a big difference on the track. We were leading the pack when we put that number up.

“We’ve improved our superspeedway program over the past few years. With the composite body, we weren’t sure what to expect. We’re pretty happy with the results.”

Newcomer Will Rodgers, in the No. 52 Ken Schrader Racing Ford, was third.

"This is the first time I’ve drafted on a superspeedway," said Rodgers. "I’ve drafted in a simulator, but not on the track for real. Trying to figure out where the yellow line on the bottom of the track is, is hard when you’re in the middle of the pack. You have to guess what the driver in front of you is going to do to arc into the turn, and you have to trust him. You have to predict where the driver in front of you is going to turn, and it's different from car to car.

“Overall, it’s pretty cool.”
