SEBRING, Fla. (March 2, 2018) -- Michael Self is checking off his list of priorities as he goes. And that's why he's at a race track in Sebring, Florida this weekend.
"I have a family now…supporting my family is priority no. 1," said Self. "I'm at Sebring (Int'l Raceway) for the day for a Trans Am race…the season-opener.
"Priority no. 2 is racing."
And that’s just the thing. Self isn't racing today; he's at one of his day-jobs, coaching clients through the ins and outs of road course racing.
"I coach the entire (Trans Am) season…every race. I'll be at Road America the weekend of March 30-31.
"I have a couple clients I'm working with right now that run the TA2 Class. Both clients run full-time on the Trans Am Series. I've had up to four (clients) at a time before."
Getting back to priority no. 1.
"Working the Trans Am Series is really a nice side gig to help supplement everything else.
"It also keeps me thinking about racing, and keeps me involved with road racing, which I love. It helps keep me sharp because I'm not racing every weekend. It keeps me in the car without being in the car. I gotta get in their mindset. You're watching video, processing data…ultimately you have to get the car faster, get their performance up."
Self, the winner of the Lucas Oil 200 at Daytona, is also eager to get back to priority no. 2.
"Believe me…I can't wait to get back in the Sinclair Oil Toyota at Nashville. I believe we test on the 28th. I've never raced there; but I went with Riley Herbst last year for the test."
Self is also candid about why he's so eager to get back in the ARCA car.
"The ARCA car is, hands-down, absolutely my favorite car to drive."
Currently, Self has 10 ARCA races on his 2018 calendar. In addition to the Daytona opener, Self is scheduled to compete at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville (April 7), Talladega Superspeedway (April 27), Charlotte Motor Speedway (May 24), Michigan International Speedway (June 8), Chicagoland Speedway (June 28), Iowa Speedway (July 7), Lucas Oil Raceway (Sept. 7), Salem Speedway (Sept. 15) and Kansas Speedway (Oct. 19).
Self has been in the news a lot over the last year, winning not only at Daytona to open the '18 season, but the Kansas ARCA 150 season finale last October. He also won two NASCAR K&N West Series races in 2017 at All American Speedway and at Meridian Speedway. He's an eight-time K&N winner overall.
He has one win and five top-5 finishes among nine career ARCA starts.
