A Week In Review With Bret Holmes

A Week In Review With Bret Holmes

2019 has five different drivers competing for the championship, Michael Self, Travis Braden, Bret Holmes, Joe Graf Jr., and Christian Eckes. Come follow each of their journeys this season where each week we set the timer for five minuets  and sit down with them to find out what’s been going on both in and out of the race car.

Next up, Bret Holmes!

ARCA: So how have you been?

Bret: Good! Just been at Auburn this week. For part of my major we have a surveying camp that's a ten-day course.

A: What’s the course over?

B: So it’s over GPS, lasers, leveling, doing a lot of layout for building pads, or footings- anything as far as that goes. We’re about half way through it now so there’s still a lot left to learn, but its pretty helpful I think.

A: The last time we talked you mentioned that you and Mindy (girlfriend) had plans to stay in Nashville through Sunday and have some fun for your birthday. But of course the ran had to come and we ended up racing on Sunday instead. Hopefully you two were still able to enjoy your birthday some.

B: The rain ruined about half of it, because after that I had the surveying camp first thing on Monday at 7. But the night before, Saturday night, we went out to dinner and had a good time, just us. We were going to go downtown but it was raining, and with it raining as much as it was it wasn’t going to be very enjoyable. So we didn’t end up doing that. We’ll figure it out. One of these summer races we’ll do something.

A: Thats unfortunate. Did you get any cool birthday presents at least?

B: I got a NASCAR monopoly board, it was a collectors addition.

A: Sweet! Big monopoly player?

B: Haha no, no. And my grandmother gave me some money that got me the surveying equipment that I needed for the next week, and a cake and everything. So overall it was pretty good.

A: That’s great! So you tested this week at Charlotte. Did you get what you were hoping to get out of it?

B: Yeah! I think it was really good. We didn’t get to run a mock-run before the session was over, so we didn’t show as good on the board as I thought that we were. I’ll admit that I’m not the best intermediate racer. It definitely does take me a little bit longer to get acclimated to those tracks and get up to speed and push the limits and I think that’s just part of racing short tracks for so long. You know, it’s a completely different feel and way to drive there. We’ve definitely got a good car though. I was really happy about it!

A: I image it’s hard to switch back and forth when you’ve been in Charlotte mode this week and now we’re off to Toledo which is, obviously, a short track. Or is there enough of a break in-between where it’s not too big of a deal for you?

B: Yeah, it’s not too bad really. When something is fresh in your mind that’s always where the win is at really. The reason I struggled really was because the last time I had ran an intermediate race was last year- August or September, maybe even July. That’s why I kind of struggled a little bit at tracks like that when you have a big break between them.

A: Definitely! So this is the first weekend we’ve had off in a minute. Do you have any plans?

B: Well, the bad thing is I have this surveying camp through the weekend. So I’m going to try to get back home on months day and see some family. That’s my plan right now. The camp will end on Tuesday and I’ll have a little bit of free time, but it’s really my only open weekend where I’m not racing and I have this going on as well.

A: Right. There’s never as much free time as we need. Well that’s been five minutes, so I will let you get back to your evening.

B: Alright, thank you!
