After a dicey heat race, 2016 ARCA Menards Series champion Chase Briscoe marched into the preliminary A-main on the opening night of the 34th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals presented by General Tire.

Briscoe started at the back of the second heat but quickly knifed to the front. By the halfway point he was battling for the lead, but came together with Sean McClelland and Anton Hernandez while battling for the lead.

Briscoe had to restart at the tail, but another incident thinned the field out and he was able to zip back up to the front quickly to finish second. With the passing points format of the event in place, Briscoe earned enough points finishing second to lock into one of the four qualifiers.

Briscoe started sixth battled with eventual winner Michael Pickens and third-place finisher Zach Daum to finish second in the third 10-lap qualifier, locking into the evening's 30-lap A-main.

Starting outside of the second row, Bricoe stayed in the top five throughout the early stages the feature, and more importantly, stayed out of trouble. The race was was slowed by numerous yellow flags and one red flag for incidents which scrambled the field. Briscoe would eventually drift out of the top five and ended the night in ninth.

The top two finishers, Cannon McIntosh and Tyler Courtney, lock into Saturday night's 55-lap A-main. The third through sixth-place finishers lock into a B-main, seventh and eighth lock into a C-main. Briscoe in ninth will lock into a D-main and have to race his way into the A through the dreaded Alphabet Soup.

Former ARCA winners Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman will be joined by FS1 pit reporter Dillon Welch as they battle 71 others to make Saturday's main event.
MAVTV will have Saturday's C-mains, B-mains, and A-main live starting at 7:30 pm ET.
