After dominating the first 91 laps of the General Tire 150 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Michael Self (No. 25 Sinclair Lubricants Toyota) was forced to settle for a fifth-place finish.
At times, Self led by nearly half a lap around the 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway and appeared to have the race well in hand before the car jumped loose on him and he brushed the outside wall on lap 88. After conferring with crew chief Shannon Rursch under the ensuing caution flag, Self did not come down pit road for tires. The rest of the lead lap cars did, however, and despite having the dominant care throughout the day Self quickly drifted through the field, falling back as far as tenth. Two late-race incidents, the first for Riley Herbst (No, 18 Monster Energy/ORCA Coolers/Terrible Herbst/Advance Auto Parts Toyota) and the second involving Codie Rohrbaugh (No. 7 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet) resulted in two wild restarts which allowed Self to make up a handful of positions.
Understandably, Self was frustrated after the race.
“I just got greedy,” Self told ARCARacing.com. “I went down into turn one and the car just jumped out from under me. We didn’t get into the wall too hard at all and the car barely had any damage. I wish they didn’t throw the caution. If we stayed green we would have been okay but as soon as the yellow came out and everyone was able to come for tires we were done.”
Self’s fifth-place finish leaves him with a 55-point advantage over Bret Holmes (No. 23 Holmes II Excavation/Southern States Bank Chevrolet) and Travis Braden (No. 27 MatrixCare/Consonus Health Care/Liberty Village Ford), who finished eighth and ninth respectively and are tied for second.
