Charles Krall (ARCA Racing): Alright we are going to do Ten Questions with Drew Dollar, driver of the No. 15 Dollar Concrete Construction Chevrolet for Venturini Motorsports. Alright Drew, question number one, if you could go on vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go and why would you go there?
Drew Dollar: That’s tough. I have never been to Australia, I feel like that would be a fun place to go. Maybe Dubai or some place like that. I have been able to go to Europe a few times and I love it over there but I have never been to a place like Dubai before. I think that would be a cool place to go.
CK: So you know in Australia they have a lot of animals down there that could kill you? You know that right?
DD: Yeah, I have watched some stuff on that and seen that. I think that adds to the excitement and it’s probably one of the reasons I want to go down there.
CK: You race car drivers are always living on the edge. Alright question number two, what’s your favorite thing to do away from the racetrack?
DD: Probably travel or just hang out with my family. I like going on family vacations and traveling around, even if its just back and forth going to the beach or something. But traveling is definitely my favorite thing to do away from racing.
CK: That’s the cool thing about racing is you get to do a lot of traveling while you doing this too.
DD: That’s true.
CK: So you are kind of a college student, you hit the pause button while we’re chasing after checkered flags and championships, but what is or was your favorite class in school, and what is your least favorite class?
DD: Favorite class, I don’t know if PE counts, I liked playing PE baseball. I really didn’t mind any of my classes. I liked them all. My toughest class was German. I stopped taking that. I definitely liked math. Math was a fun class for me. I actually liked taking art history too.
CK: I didn’t take German, I took French and I was very good at it back in high school, but I couldn’t recite one French word to you know some thirty years later. Maybe I should have paid better attention.
DD: I am in the same boat.
CK: If you could pick anyone, living or dead, racing person or a non-racing person, to attend a pre-race dinner with who would you want it to be and where would you want to go?
DD: That’s tough too. I feel like I would like to sit down with Ronald Reagan and have lunch with him. That would be cool. Something I would ever get the chance to go.
CK: It’s been 40 years since he’s been president, obviously well before your time, so it would be kind of interesting to hear those stories, not only of his presidency but way back when he was an actor.
DD: Yeah for sure. One of the things that makes me say that is I have been watching some Netflix lately, watching Narcos, and they have been talking about Reagan a little bit so maybe that’s why it’s on my mind.
RACING-REFERENCE: Drew Dollar Career Statistics
CK: That’s a good show. You’re a relatively young guy, recently out of high school and transitioning into the college life and chasing after checkered flags here in the ARCA Menards Series. For the young drivers that are going to follow your footsteps, what kind of example would you like to set for those kids who come into racing after you?
DD: I want to be successful and win as many races as I can but I want to stay humble and have an even head about anything. I want to stay calm and listen to anyone trying to help me and be a good influence on anyone I can.
CK: The first car I ever bought with my own money was a 1985 four-foor Dodge Omni, it cost $750 back in 1991. What was the first car you ever had? Was it something your parents helped out with? I will fully confess, my parents helped out with the seven hundred and fifty bucks. Was it something you bought on your own or did your parent help you get it?
DD: The first car I ever had, I still have it, unfortunately it’s not a Toyota so I still need to make that transition, but the first car I ever had was a Ford Raptor I got when I was 16. That was what I always wanted. My parents definitely helped out on that.
CK: I bet it didn’t cost $750.
DD: No, it definitely didn’t.
CK: Man, that Omni, if it hit 80 miles an hour downhill it had to have a tailwind. It was not a great car. I crashed that car. It’s the only car I ever crashed.
What is the biggest contribution that you think you give to your Venturini Motorsports team?
DD: I think at least in the shop I give them a little entertainment. I try to work on the cars and learn, but that’s not what I am a professional in. I try to hang out and keep the spirits up a little bit. Maybe that’s the most I do at the shop. I help with tearing the cars down when they come back wrecked. Other than that, I am not putting brake lines in or anything like that.
CK: I worked for a race team back in the day and my only official non marketing or PR duty was to be the brake pedal holder during pit stop practice. It’s all they could trust me with.
DD: I think I am in the same boat.
CK: Let’s transition to race day. It’s race day and we are about to drop the green flag. Do you have any pre-race rituals that you absolutely have to do before you hop in the race car to go race?
DD: Not really. I try to stay away from superstitious stuff but at the same time I like to have a schedule when I am at the track. I try to get some time before I get in the car to myself so I can think, but not too much. I don’t want to get in my own head. I just like some time to relax and calm down. When you are running around at the track, from practice to an autograph session to qualifying, I just want to find some time by myself to relax a little bit.
CK: I have one more question for you, then we’ll have one more question asked to you by Ryan Repko, and then we’ll have you give us a question to ask Michael Self. The final question I have for you, kind of a tricky one. Let’s just go off the schedule before the world came to an end, or came to a stop, hopefully we don’t come to an end! Watch what you’re saying here Charlie. Let’s pretend the next race on the schedule is Salem Speedway, and it’s two laps to go. You’re charging through turns three and four and the white flag is in the air. You’re right on the bumper of Chandler Smith, your teammate. What’s the outcome of that final lap. Is Drew Dollar celebrating in Victory Lane? How does that play out?
DD: I am not going to do anything stupid but I am definitely going to end up in Victory Lane. And he would definitely move me too. That’s how we race each other but we’re not going to wreck each other especially being teammates. There would be some bumper involved unless I had the chance to pass him clean.
CK: Hopefully we get a chance to see it. The question Ryan Repko has for you is, he was on social media and saw a picture of you celebrating a legends car win and he just wanted to know what that felt like for you, celebrating your first win?
DD: I honestly don’t remember the first win. I guess it was probably more of a relief. Excited but glad I was able to do something I set my mind to. Something I told myself I could do. I felt a relief to cross the first one off the list, and once you get the first one the others seem to come a little more easily.
CK: Always great to accomplish a goal you set yourself out to do, isn’t it?
DD: Yes sir.
CK: Our next interviewee is going to be another of your Venturini Motorsports teammates Michael Self. If you could ask Michael any question in the world and he has to answer it, what would you ask?
DD: A good one for him is how is his house work going? Is he going to get all of it done during this down time?
CK: He doesn’t want Dana kicking him out does he?
DD: They are painting and he’s having to do a bunch around the house. He’s always telling us how much work he has to do around the house.
CK: Maybe that’s just his excuse for not wanting to hang out with you guys?
DD: Yeah, maybe. That will be a good way to put him on the spot. We need to find out if he will be finished by the time we get out of this.
