NEWTON, Iowa — In a field that includes four championship points leaders – three of whom have already won at Iowa Speedway – it was another driver who led the way in practice Saturday afternoon.
Ty Gibbs posted the fastest lap in the one-hour session for Saturday evening’s Shore Lunch 150, piloting the No. 18 Monster Energy/Terrible Herbst/ORCA Toyota around the .875-mile track in 24.894 seconds (126.537 mph).
Gibbs has won three of the last four times he’s been on the race track. He enters Saturday’s race, which serves as both the seventh race in the ARCA Menards Series and third round in the Sioux Chief Showdown, seventh and fourth in those standings respectively.
Max McLaughlin, making just his second series start, was second fastest at 25.059 (125.523).
Sam Mayer, who leads Gibbs in the ARCA Menards Series East, was third fastest at 25.204 (124.980). Mayer edged Gibbs last year to win the East-West race at Iowa.
Michael Self, the ARCA Menards Series points leader and 2013 East-West winner at Iowa, was fourth quick. Chandler Smith, the Sioux Chief Showdown points leader and defending ARCA race winner at Iowa, was fifth fastest.
Kody Swanson, the five time USAC Silver Crown champion making his ARCA debut, was sixth, followed by Hailie Deegan, Taylor Gray, Bret Holmes and Thad Moffitt. ARCA Menards Series West points leader Jesse Love was 12th fastest.
The Shore Lunch 150 is scheduled to take the green at 5:30 p.m. ET live on MAVTV and TrackPass on NBC Gold.
