Former ARCA Menards Series team owner Charlie Newby passes away at 86

Charles “Charlie” Newby, who as an ARCA Menards Series team owner fielded cars in 167 races from 1986-1997 and built race engines for over 50 years, passed away on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 at the age of 86.

Newby’s ARCA Menards Series drivers were Roger Blackstock, Andy Farr, Mark Gibson, James Hylton, Doug Kalitta, Donnie LaDuke, Dennis Metdepenningen, Rick Sheppard, Rick Van Vyve and Dave Weltmeyer. He finished in the top-10 in owner point standings four times, his best being 6th in 1991 with Gibson driving his cars. He recorded 12 top-5 finishes and 40 top-10 finishes in cars he fielded numbered 7 and 77. LaDuke, Sheppard, Farr and Gibson all scored top-5 finishes in Newby’s cars, with his best a 2nd place at Nashville Fairgrounds in 1992 with Sheppard at the wheel.

A native of Mt. Clemens Michigan, Newby was a veteran of the US Army. He worked as a mechanic for Russ Milne Ford and Sterling Heights Dodge prior to joining General Motors, from which he retired in 2001 after 22 years of service. His early racing days were at Mt. Clemens Race Track and was an engine builder from his 20s into his 80s.

Charlie Newby is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pat; children Robert Newby, Janice (Michael) Palazzolo and Donna (Dennis) Dunlap; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and siblings Sandra Pesendorfer, Emma (Robert) Tabor and Mary Ann Schoen.

Visitation is Thursday, January 23 from 2-8pm at the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main, Mt. Clemens and private burial will talka place at Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Township. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Crohns and Colitis Foundation.
